Every year, there are more than 3,500 fires on college campuses. Do your part to prevent a fire in your residence hall by understanding electrical safety.
- Power strips: Another must-have for dorms. When buying power strips make sure it includes an over-current protector (surge protection). This will shut off power to the strip automatically if there is too much current being drawn.
- Extension cords: Single outlet extension cords are prohibited in the residence halls.
- Lighting: Use light bulbs that are the correct wattage for the lamp. If you do not know what wattage to use, stay with a bulb with less than 60 watts. If your lights flicker or electronics shut off, notify maintenance.
- Cords: Never tack or nail an electrical cord or run a cord across high-traffic paths or under rugs. Keep all of your appliances and cords safely away from bedding, curtains and other flammable materials.
- Damaged/Frayed Electronics: Discard or repair damaged electronics. It may be tempting to use an electronic with a frayed cord or damaged plug-in to save money. However, damaged electronics should not be used, since they can shock or electrocute students.
- Outlets: Watch out for outlets that may overheat. If an outlet becomes so hot you cannot rest your hand on it, there is a potential for fire. Unplug everything and notify maintenance immediately. Only one power strip should be plugged in per outlet and you should not plug in multiple appliances to a single outlet. This would result in failing the Health and Safety Inspection.
- Fire: Get to know your residence hall. Take some time to locate the fire exits and escape routes on your floor and throughout the building, so you know exactly where to go in case of a fire.
- Smoke Detectors: Smoke detectors are critical for your safety. Never disengage a smoke detector that is beeping. The beeping usually indicates that the battery needs to be replaced or that there is an issue with the device. Instead of disabling it, submit a maintenance request through StarRez, reporting the issue. A maintenance professional will replace the battery or the device to ensure your safety.
- Scooters and other electric mobility devices: These devices are strictly prohibited in all residence halls and other campus buildings.
