Many residences halls on campus have sinks without garbage disposals. In these halls, remember to put all food waste in the trash before washing dishes.
If you do have a garbage disposal:
Always turn the water on before engaging the disposal.
Do not put the following items down the disposal. It will become clogged and require maintenance to repair it.
- Dry or cooked pasta
- Dry or cooked rice
- Fibrous or stringy fruits and vegetables such as asparagus, celery, banana peels, corn husks and rhubarb
- Bones
- Nuts or seeds
- Potato peels
- Egg shells
- Coffee grounds
- Grease
- Onion layers
- Non-food materials
In the kitchen, the most common drain clogs are caused by grease buildup in the sink. To prevent these clogs, please save grease in a plastic or glass container until it cools and dispose of it in the garbage.
- Never pour hot grease down the drain. Although the hot grease is liquid, it quickly solidifies in the pipes. This grease build ups over time and can trap other debris.
