Tips to Prevent Bugs & Odors
There are a number of things residents can do to prevent pests and odors while practicing a zero waste lifestyle.
- Keep the lid closed when not in use.
- Line your bin with a compostable bag (optional).
- Layer “wet” food scraps with “dry” paper items.
- Empty your bin multiple times per week, especially in warm weather.
- Store in a cool, dark place; such as under your sink or in the refrigerator or freezer.
- Clean your bin each time you empty it.
How to Clean Your Compost Bucket
Some residence halls allow residents to check out individual compost bins for their apartment. Keeping these clean is a great way to support the prevention of pests and odors in the residence halls. To clean your bin we encourage you to follow these steps.
- Empty out your bin completely.
- Rinse with warm water + mild soap.
- Scrub any residue with a sponge or brush.
- Dry before adding a new compostable liner. (For extra freshness, use a little baking soda or vinegar.)
