As part of Georgia Tech’s ongoing commitment to aligning services across the Institute, there will be consolidation of all campus post office operations, including those currently operating at GLC/Tenth and Home. On Wednesday, March 26, an information session was held to answer questions and provide clarity regarding the decision and the transition period. During this information session many important questions were raised about the safety of documents, receipt of large packages, and other concerns faced by the GLC and Tenth and Home community.
As mentioned in the information session, Housing and Residence Life (HRL) has collaborated with our partners in the Office of International Education (OIE), the Georgia Tech Post Office (GTPO) and other key decision makers to provide answers. If you find that your question is not answered or have an additional question you would like to pose, please submit it through this form.
Where can I view the presentation shared on Wednesday, March 26?
You can view the presentation here. Residents received the initial notification to their Georgia Tech email account of the mail transition on Monday, March 17.
Why is this transition happening?
Over the last few years, HRL has collaborated across the Institute to identify areas to improve services for all students. The information collected highlighted the concerns regarding lost or misplaced mail pieces, the high volume of packages coming into the GLC package room, the inconsistency of delivery times and locations around the community, and the strain on labor and physical resources. These factors, among others, led to numerous discussions around how to mitigate these issues and enhance our operations. It is important to note, the Georgia Tech Post Office (GTPO) is a contracted unit of the United States Postal Service (USPS) with the training, resources and infrastructure to properly care for every piece of mail.
Will the grace period be extended?
Yes. We have worked with our Capital Project Team to ensure that we will still be able to operate the package room, and we will be extending the grace period from May 12 to May 16, 2025. There will be construction taking place in the building that week, so please be mindful of that, but we will still be able to operate the package room.
When will my new mailing address be available?
Residents will receive an email from Housing and Residence Life by Friday, April 11, which will include the necessary steps to locate their new mailing address through the BuzzPort system.
What happens to my mail after the now May 16 cutoff date?
Mail delivered to the old mailing address after the May 16 cutoff date will be re-delivered to the JLSC to be processed for residents to pick up once notified. Residents anticipating mail to arrive after May 16 should monitor their email for updates from their sender and from GTPO about its arrival.
What is the difference between my residential address and my mailing address?
Your residential address is where you live, while your mailing address is where you receive mail; sometimes these addresses are the same. Often for on-campus college students or those during a period of transition will utilize a mailing address to receive important documents and mail pieces.
Your residential address is the physical address of your building XXX 10th St., Atlanta, GA, 30318 for Tenth and Home and 301 10th St., Atlanta, GA, 30318 for GLC. This should be used for your Driver’s License, Instacart, DoorDash, grocery deliveries, not your mail delivery. Please be reminded that residents need to be present to receive these items.
Your mailing address is the address you will find in BuzzPort and should be used for receiving mail, package deliveries and important documents.
If you need a proof of residency form, visit My Housing, click Resources, Proof of Residency.
What should I do if I have mail expected to arrive after May 16?
Beginning May 17, all mail received to the GLC package room will be re-delivered to the John Lewis Student Center (JLSC) for processing. By April 11, residents will receive an email explaining how to obtain their new mailing address in BuzzPort*, and they should then utilize this information to notify their senders of the update.
*We will update this article to include the mail transition information once your new address has been created in BuzzPort.
What if I live in an unfurnished apartment and need to order larger items such as furniture?
Housing and Residence Life is currently working with our internal Facilities team to determine a strategy for receiving and delivering large packages to Tenth and Home during peak times of the year. We will provide additional updates as information becomes available.
Do I need to change the address on my Driver’s License, Passport or Identification card?
No, you will not need to update the address on your identification to this new mailing address.
How does this transition improve the mail services for GLC and Tenth and Home residents?
The volume of mail, including critical documents and packages, arriving at the GLC package room has exceeded the capacity of our current office staff. Despite our ongoing efforts to coordinate with delivery drivers and mail carriers, items are frequently misplaced, left at various locations around the community, or delivered outside office hours. To ensure the security, accuracy, and timely delivery of your mail, we are transitioning this process to the John Lewis Student Center (JLSC) post office, a service supported by the United States Postal Service (USPS). This move will significantly enhance the safety of sensitive documents and guarantee more reliable handling of your packages.
Can I opt-out of the mail transition and continue to receive mail to the GLC package room?
No. Residents are not eligible to “opt-out” of this transition. If you do not wish to receive mail at the JLSC, you can utilize an outside process if they wish. All on-campus residents, including GLC and Tenth and Home residents, will utilize the same process of collecting their mail from the JLSC.
How do I get from my community to the JLSC Post Office?
The JLSC Post Office is located on the first floor of the John Lewis Student Center, 351 Ferst Dr NW, Atlanta, GA 30332. Residents can utilize the Gold Stinger Route going from the front of the GLC/TAH Area Office to the JLSC. We encourage residents to download the Transloc app to see bus routes. Other alternatives include during favorable weather conditions the walking the 0.7-mile route through campus or driving and parking in the Student Center Parking Deck.
Can I still receive food packages (Hello Fresh, Factor, etc.)?
The JLSC Post Office has a refrigeration area where these types of packages are kept after processing. Food deliveries such as DoorDash, Instacart, grocery deliveries remain the resident’s responsibility to collect from their residential address.
How do I update my information with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)?
Residents who utilize these services should update their mailing address on the USCIS website as soon as the address becomes available. USPS will not notify USCIS of a change in address. Residents who are awaiting forms that may arrive after the May 12 cut-off date will pick up their mail pieces from the JLSC.
If you would like additional information or support, please contact the Office of International Education (OIE) via email at info@oie.gatech.edu.
How will wait times for package processing and notification change?
Due to the increase in mail pieces arriving to the JLSC post office and the increase in students utilizing the service, there may be a delay in services while this shift occurs. The GTPO will be hiring an additional staff member and adding a workstation in anticipation of this change. The GTPO staff is committed to the safety and security of all mail and remain the most properly trained entity to handle mail for the Institute.
