To help keep our hall bike rooms and adjacent racks open for new riders and to prevent theft, bikes that are deemed abandoned are removed at the end of each semester.
When you leave for summer, we strongly encourage you to take your bike with you as bikes are not meant to be stored on campus bike racks long-term. Spaces on bike racks are needed for individuals actively traveling on campus. If residents need storage for their bike over the summer, they must fill out this form to register with Housing and Residence Life for one of the following:
- Summer Resident storage: those living on campus for the summer will have designated bike rooms and racks around their summer residence hall so that those bikes are not deemed abandoned by mistake.
- Over-Summer storage: those who do not live on campus during the summer will have designated bike rooms and racks around campus to leave their bikes for the summer so that those bikes are not deemed abandoned by mistake.
Any bikes stored there must be registered with Housing and GTPD so that we can verify that a bike should not be considered abandoned. You can also donate your bike through Green Goodbyes.
As a reminder, Georgia Tech is not responsible for your belongings, so storing your bike over the summer is at your own risk. We encourage all students to maintain a renter's insurance policy to protect their belongings.
The bike removal process will begin the Monday following commencement. GTPD and the Starter Bikes student organization will work together to conduct a sweep of bikes left on campus. The bike sweep will last for two days. All bikes will be temporarily tagged with a tag that clearly states that the bike has been potentially abandoned. Tagging of bikes will be recorded and all owners of bikes that have been registered with the GTPD database will be notified to retrieve their bike. If the bike has not been retrieved within 30 days, it will be moved to a storage facility where it will be held for another 30 days. Any bike that has not been claimed at this point will be donated to Starter Bikes, Green Goodbyes, or any other campus entity for recirculation in the Georgia Tech Community.
While large campus-wide sweeps of bikes take place at the end of the academic year, a bike can be tagged as abandoned at any time. Bikes that do not adhere to guidelines or that are blocking traffic can be moved and tagged as abandoned. Bikes may be tagged and moved under these circumstances, but will still be held for 30 days before being donated.
