Students who need to cancel their housing contract for spring because they are graduating, studying abroad, or co-op/interning more than 25 miles from campus can do so without penalty, provided the proper documentation is submitted and approved (see eligibility and documentation information below).
It is important that those students cancel their housing contract by following the steps below as soon as they are certain of their plans, as this helps open spots for other students in need of housing for spring.
Graduate Cancellation Steps:
- Visit My Housing, select the Resources tab and follow the Petition to Graduate link,
- Choose the statement that pertains to you and then click Save & Continue.
- If you choose option A: Select Graduation as your reason for Cancellation from the drop-down and if the spring Term ONLY box is checked, you are canceling the spring semester of your academic year contract.
- If you choose option B: You have not canceled your academic year housing contract and will remain in your assignment for spring semester.
- Upon completion of cancellation, you will receive a confirmation e-mail which should be retained as proof of cancellation.
Study Abroad, Co-op, or Internship Steps:
- Visit My Housing, select the Resources tab, and follow the Cancel My Housing link from the drop-down menu.
- Select your application, then select your reason for canceling from the drop-down, check the Spring Term ONLY box if you are canceling the spring semester of your academic year contract, then click Save & Continue.
- Be sure to click Cancel My Housing to submit your cancellation.
- Upon completion of cancellation, you will receive a confirmation e-mail which should be retained as proof of cancellation.
- Documentation can be uploaded to My Housing any time after you cancel. For example: co-op, internship, and study abroad verification forms.
About Eligibility and Documentation:
- Those graduating: we require written verification of graduation from the Registrar’s Office. Graduation release is not when Student has completed their thesis, dissertation and/or course work, but at the end of the semester in which the student is requesting to be released, as noted on the official school calendar.
- An undergraduate resident who will matriculate in Fall and then continue on as a graduate student at Georgia Tech in the spring is able to continue their housing contract for spring if desired.
- For approved Georgia Institute of Technology co-op, internship, and Study Abroad programs: we require a DocuSign completed “Verification of Employment/Study Abroad: Georgia Institute of Technology Internship, Georgia Institute of Technology Co-op and Georgia Institute of Technology Study Abroad Programs” form, attainable through your academic advisor or program coordinator. Internships and co-ops must be located at least twenty-five (25) miles or more from Georgia Tech's main campus to be released from a housing contract.
- There are several uncommon approved reasons for a penalty-free cancellation, listed at the bottom of this page.
- The Department of Housing and Residence Life will make copies of the above-requested original documents. If not in English, a certified English translation is required. Department shall determine the sufficiency of the documentation presented. Otherwise, the Student will be responsible for the remainder of the Contract (License and fees).
- Be aware that notifying other Georgia Tech offices (i.e., Admission’s Office, Registrar’s Office, Bursar’s Office, etc.) DOES NOT cancel your housing contract.
Penalties for Cancellation:
- Those canceling due to the approved reasons can cancel penalty-free, pending documentation
- For all others canceling, the penalty will be the full semester's rent.
